Shadowing on my CRT just started....

Hi all,

I'm not quite sure how to explain this, but I'll do my best.

I have an NEC MultiSync FE791SB 17 inch CRT (SuperBright Diamondtron) that I bought a couple of years ago. It's served me very well, and I've had no problems with it. If it matters, my video card is a PNY GeForce 6800GT.

Anyway, just today, I've noticed what I can only describe as some sort of "shadowing" effect that is affecting everything on my monitor. Next to every letter is sort of a faint light shadow reflecting it. While I am typing right now, to the right of the cursor is a sort of lighter "mirror" of the cursor. Maybe shadow isn't the right word since it isn't darker.

Anyway, the end result seems to be to make it look sort of like the screen is blurry, and it's definitely most noticeable on things like text, the borders of windows, etc. I can see this sort of shadowing/mirroring to the right of just about everything.

Does anyone have any ideas on what could possibly be going on, or how to fix it? Is this a sign that my monitor is dying out?

Thanks!

Also, not sure if it matters, but I also use a wireless Logitech keyboard, and a LinkSys USB 802.11b/g connector. Neither of these have caused any problems before, but I figured I should mention them just in case.

K this is a total shot in the dark but have you put anything like unshielded speake(s) by your CRT or a cell phone or any thing new? If not try to get everything away from the CRT and try it on another computer...I hope you can find the problem GL.

Sounds like it may be getting blurry and going out of focus. If this is the case you will have to crank it open and adjust the focus screws on the flyback transformer.

Also, wiggle your vga cable and see if it change it. Your cable may have a break in it.

Are you using a DVI-to-VGA adaptor, or a KVM, or any sort of adaptors or extension on your monitor cable? Do you have any alternative video cards to test the CRT with? Have you tried a "degauss" of the CRT, if has a button/option for that?

It sounds like analog signal-quality issues, of the type that many NV cards are famous for. I would try swapping in a decent-quality ATI or Matrox card (strictly for testing), and see if you notice a visible difference or not. If you do, then it's the card. If all of the cards do it, then there is something going on with the CRT.

If it is the cable, what can I do about it? It seems to be integrated into the monitor (i.e. I can't see any way to unplug or replace the cable).

My monitor has the same shadow under to the bottom right of the cursor, its a Samsung SyncMaster 793DF. This has been on and off for me. Last night, it wasn't there, but it is today. I don't see shadows in other places though, and everything seems crisp.
