Is this the future for America?
Notice how people are saying hate speech is the precursor for civil war.
I don't think America is anywhere close to experiencing another civil war. Two very different countries with very different histories and with very different neighbors and geopolitics. And honestly, a lot of our issues here in the United States would be resolved if we grew up, stopped being so easily offended, and re-learned what our core values were.
I may struggle to explain this next part, so bear with me here.
The problem with the hate speech discussion in America is that people continually redefine hate speech to fit the narrative of what "offends" them in that moment. But this is the key to understanding the entire hate speech debate and looking at it from a reasonable, mature outside perspective: The human brain biologically responds to intellectual offense the same way it responds physical offense, and freedom of speech always, always requires an environment where two people are willing participants to listen to each other's ideas and possibly be offended by them. This means that any disagreement, even disagreements of whether tomatoes are better than onions, can potentially become "violence inciting".
Now, an onions vs tomatoes debate is an extreme example, but you get the point. But the problem now is that people are suddenly labeling each other's ideas as hate speech when, in fact, they're not. People are being labelled as white supremacists when, in fact, they're not. People are being labelled as bigots, and racists, and whatnot. And some are, not going to deny that, but a lot aren't. They're just people with differing ideas, and they deserve the same representation as anyone else.
Silverbacks are enormously powerful animals. But if you ever watch Silverbacks in videos or in the zoo, you'll notice that their tendency is to use small bouts of physical force to communicate. A quick knock in the arm, or a quick slap in the face. When language breaks down, and communication is no longer possible because two parties cannot agree on the definitions of words and expressions, then the only possible resort becomes violence.
Are we humans in this country, or do we choose to act like a bunch of apes?
