well my brother is moving off to college and that means that hes taking his computer (see sig) with him. that leaves me with the emachines my mom just bought: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/ol...ype=product&cmp=++ sounds really bad but it does have an AGP slot. thats why i've been looking for a GFX card and i think ive come to 2 choices: BFG 6800OC and the XFX 6600GT AGP, im sure you are all familiar with them. My question is : Is the PSU in the eMachines powerful enough to power one of the 2 cards (I dont perfer which one)?

the BFG says it needs 300w while the 6600GT needs 350. I know gateway makes these crapMachines so does that mean that the PSU will have enough to run one of these? only thing in there is 1 optical, a media card reader, and a HDD.

Thanks!

The 6800 would need more power than the 6600. In any case, the EMachines T2899 has a 300w power supply according to their site.

Most of the emachines had ps problems anyway. Definitely upgrade it.

Yea OEM power supplies just suck in general, if your going to put a high powered card in I'd say upgrade it.

When I added a second hard drive to my Dell 4600 box my PSU went into like hyperdrive mode and the fan was anoying loud. So I replaced it and I never realized it until I replaced it but Dell 4600s only come with 250W PSUs!

It sounds bad? It has a CPU just slightly slower than your bro's and if that config in your sig is running stock like you have it listed then the 2700DDR running synch@333fsb will bring performance very similar to a barton 3200+@400fsb and 2700DDR running asynch because of a significant latency penalty if he has a nF2 board like the e-Machines does. The HDD may only be 2mb cache on the OEM though so if your bros is 8mb cache that will make a noticable difference to performance in that area but the board+CPU won't have any perceptable differences. You can probably use Clockgen or the nV utility to overclock that system to 3200+ speed too.

I also don't think that system will have any trouble handling a 6600GT as is, the 6800GT may or may not run well depnding on the PSU's quality. I have run a 6800GT@431/1.1ghz + 2.3ghz T-bred in a SFF with a 200W ACHME PSU so it is more about power quality than wattage rating sometimes. Personally I would just put either card in there and evaluate it before springing for a new one.

thanks for the replies, the 6600GT will probably be my choice, but if the computer doesnt have the power to power it then which PSU will fit in the eMachines? would any PSU work (antec true350 maybe)??
