If you would examine the possible answers to my question it would mean that either:

A) Nvidia is indeed "standing proudly alone" and as such is a monopoly.

B) ATI/AMD is still considered a competitor making Nvidia not "standing proudly alone".

EITHER way, you're comments were wrong. Although you'd like to have it both ways, you can't have Nvidia be the only GPU vendor and still say that they're "not a monopoly."
 
Wow quite a problem we find Gstanfor in isn't it. On one hand he would love to say that AMD (ATI) isn't competing in the marketplace. On the other he doesn't want to say that Nvidia are a monopoly. Guess, someone is just going to have to swallow their pride.

Whileever there are other GPU's being sold, nvidia in now wazy enjoys a monopoly of the GPU market. They may be the only independent company in the gpu market but that is completely different to being a monopoly.

So is AMD not an independent company now? Your previous claims have seemed to suggest that ATi is no more and if AMD sells GPU's then aren't they an independent company?

How would Nvidia be "alone" if we have another independent company selling GPU's?

A) ATi isn't "gone", in which case Nvidia isn't "alone."

B) AMD is now an independent company (since ATi is no more, right?) that sells GPU's, making Nvidia the opposite of "alone."

C) Nvidia is indeed the only independent GPU vendor, making them a monopoly.

You're trying so very hard to have it both ways...

You keep harping on about nvidia supposedly being a monopoly, yet AMD was subpoena'd first and I've already shown the analysts memory price fixing claims have no basis in reality (at least where nvidia is concerned).

That has nothing to do with my questions regarding your comments. I'm asking you what makes Nvidia "alone" but not a monopoly.
 
They are alone in the sense that they are the only GPU company with products relevant to the consumer thar is strong enough to stand on their own two feet without requiring assistance from a larger parent company (and they are free from the demands a parent company would place upon them also).

Everyone else has been bought out. That doesn't make them a monopoly though, since those bought out companies still compete in the GPU market place.

First off, thank you for addressing my question.

Second, if ATi no longer exists as a parental, individual GPU vendor and AMD has the reins, doesn't that make AMD a GPU vendor--one that can:

If it is now AMD and not ATi that is the alternative GPU provider, they would fall under your classification of a "solo" company, one that is "strong enough to stand on their own two feet" and then some.

This is why I find your previous claims mistaken. Nvidia isn't alone, and, if they indeed are, they are a monopoly.
 
The question you need to ask is "Are GPU's AMD's primary market/Product?" (the evil person in me would suggest that if AMD doesn't extract their finger from their rear-end and start competing on a meaningful level with intel again, GPU's may well become their primary market/product.... but that has yet to happen).

I wouldn't say it has to be their primary product at all. Microsoft's "primary" products have been software, yet they still compete with gaming consoles.

So long as their is a "parental" or "independent" company supplying quality products in an area where there is at least one other equivalent company supplying a quality product a monopoly will be avoided. Such is the case I see with the GPU industry.

I agree with you that Nvidia isn't a monopoly because I can't see how they're "alone." AMD is now in this industry too if indeed ATi is completely gone, making the GPU industry still holding two competitors.

Of course, this is for the time being. None of us know what will happen after R600, and it is probably best to wait to see how things fold before engaging in a speculative argument.

I think Gstanfor is pushing for that "Harsh " mod action he was warned with about a month ago. Calling Josh a fvckwit would seam to violate TOS here. Especially since Josh did not retaliate in any way.

Well, honestly I enjoyed have rollo around, it was funny to read how bias his threads were. Anyways video is finally back, or at least the mods left. I haven't been able to read a 14 page troll thread in ages, keep it coming! I have the whole night....
