So, I have a feeling I am in for an epic adventure and journey.

I decided to give Netflix a try. 1 month free trial of Netflix Watch Instantly, and I do have a feeling I may either upgrade my account completely with a few discs (probably the cheapest option, I don't rent all that often anymore), or I might keep the streaming and simply go with Redbox or something.

With Blockbuster stores closing all around, the Total Access thing isn't working out the way it did, and not feeling the idea of paying for mailed discs anymore.
I'll probably just hit up Redbox and Blockbuster Express kiosks for Blu-rays for those that need them. Older TV shows and movies will probably be perfect for Netflix.

But damn, I've got 10 "long" seasons to blow through here. I've got 4 months of downtime to attend to, so it'll probably happen here. :D Stupid hotel room TV is only a basic CRT, but it works better for the first 7 or so seasons of SG1.

Started out with a bang with the 90 minute premier. Anyone have opinions about what I have in store?

Make sure to watch the "groundhog" version episode at least 3 times so you can enjoy it to it's fullest. ;)

This may be blasphemy, but I'm glad I saw some of the series before the movie, otherwise I probably wouldn't have watched the series at all. My take on it is that 45% of it is Kurt Russel glaring at something, 45% is people saying "I don't understand what you're saying," and 10% is stuff blowing up.

Oh well. I've got both the SG1 and Atlantis complete series sets.
Yes, the later seasons of SG1 were a bit weird, which I believe is partly because they thought the show was going to be canceled, but then it wasn't, and there were some major shifts in plot and cast. Some episodes of Atlantis were also a bit funky. But overall, twas entertaining. :) Plus, I hadn't seen many space type shows like this that would indulge the audience with a continuous minute-long effects sequence.

We talking about the original "Stargate" movie?

Seen it. A few times, for quite a long time ago; however, watching the first episode keyed my brain to all the details, I didn't feel lost once.

I think Kurt Russel did a good job in the movie, but that's not the point in watching it first. The Movie and Series don't entirely mesh up in the story, but there is significant story continuation.

Don't lose heart when you run into the "Carter vs. the planet of male chauvinist pigs that need to learn respect" episode in season 1. That's one of the few bad ones in seasons 1-9.

Also, expect a clip show episode every 1-2 seasons. Including the unique innovation of a clip show that includes a clip from an earlier clip show.

You're almost guaranteed to like it through season 7. After that opinions vary.

I liked the movie. I was confused when I first started SG-1 as I didn't watch the movie first.

I would definitely suggest watching the movie first OP.

I love that show. I even tried to get my wife trained to open the door when I yell Carter dial the gate!

She told me to shove a staff weapon up my ass o_O

Did she specify if the staff weapon should be shoved in and then opened, or the other way around?

Don't forget about SGU. Ended up being a good show. Too bad it got cancelled.

Yeah currently watching SGU on Netflix. I don't care what anyone says, I like it. To be honest, it didn't need to be Stargate either, it seems tacked on.

I actually had planned to queue up SGU, because I kind of wanted to catch up on modern shows, and wasn't sure about starting a 10 season series...

reviews basically said SGU wasn't very SG-ish, but the consensus seemed to be very intelligently-portrayed characters... but script and the overall plot was hit and miss.

I never understood the hate about drama, but I guess it's a big no-no in the sci-fi world. It should be there, but minimal?

One of the reasons I loved BSG (new) so much was the raw drama.

a few episodes into SG1, I am definitely seeing more shallow writing than something as awesome as BSG... but it's tolerable enough and the story so far is fun to follow.

But that's my nature for creative writing - I prefer raw realism (to an extent - sometimes "real" has to be dialed back for certain styles of story), and that typically demands characters that have moments of surging emotions, and the themes of conversation and what drives people shouldn't be shallow - but then again, a lot of people could not care less about those details. oh well

I'll give SGU a try... whenever I manage to wrap up SG1. Could be awhile...

The first season of SG-1 is a bit tough on many episodes (you have to remember that these were originally shown in 1997). If you are feeling the drag, skip straight to the two or three episodes from season one finale and start from there. Season two is a little better, but if you got to the end then it picks up quickly after that.

If you're committed to it, it's a great trip. I've posted this before on another thread, but I started this exact same journey sometime in the beginning of 2010 and completed it in a little more than a year (SG-1 + SGA + SG:U to the latest). It was worth it.

Just wanted to add that if you haven't followed the Stargate series before and you liked BSG, then you're going to love SG:U. The darkness/realism and the character stories of SG:U are definitely similar to BSG, much more so than SG-1 and SGA. A lot of Stargate fans hated SG:U in the beginning because it didn't 'feel' much like a Stargate show, at least not until later.

My problem with SGU wasn't the drama per se, although all the angsty jealousy going on was pretty tedious, but that they had a show that favored a strong story arc and they mostly neglected it to maintain the modular episode format of the other SGs. This was much worse in S1 than S2, but it was really dumb how semi-important stuff would happen and they would never flesh out the story or just leave loose ends all over the place. It was just frustrating to watch and poorly done. You have to remember also that the other SGs never took themselves very seriously while SGU clearly did, but it had just as many if not more examples of over the top deus ex machina than the old ones.

You might as well still watch it, I did. You'll either like it or you won't, and even if you don't you're probably just as pathetically desperate to watch sci-fi as I was you'll suffer through it anyway.

SG1 rules. I do agree S7 and before is the best but I didn't dislike the rest. Groundhog day episode does rule too :)

SGU... started like shit. However, by the end the writers turned it around 180 and it became a rather decent show right before they canned it.
