SFF suggestions for gaming...

Is there an SFF that will take all the goodies for high end gaming as in full hight video cards and such or do they all I just don't see how that little guy can do all the big ones can and do you still get overclock options just fill in a new guy like he has never seen one before?

OH yea and I have a 9800pro, Kingston HyperX pc3500 2x256, and an AMD xp2400 that I would like to use in this little monster and I have a xp3000 on the way.. so suggest some good ones that I can use for Lan parties... Games will be it's only job..

If this is for games then I would think you would need at least a gig of ram and a little bit faster processor.

Hi yokomo, I am considering doing a similar thing, but I am quite wary of buying pre-built SFFs as they are cramped and not very upgradeable. What I would suggest doing is purchasing a micro-ATX motherboard and using this Chenming cube case to put your components in - it has a 120mm fan for good cooling, takes standard ATX power supplies (provided your DVD drives are ~7" long or less), and supports all m-ATX motherboards while having 4 slots for PCI and AGP/PCI-E. The windowed version is OOS, but the non-windowed version is $82 at Newegg. (search for Chenming 118). Also, there is a rebadged version of this case selling under the Aspire X-QPACK name, it uses a different PSU and simply has 3 windows rather than 1 or none (2 on sides, 1 on top). This is probably the best m-ATX cube case I have seen, the Aria is a little limited and thermally inefficient. Good luck...

Shuttles have great build quality, but they are not as upgradeable as Micro-ATX systems, but they are smaller and quieter.

millero I actually had a gig of value ram before I got this hyperx and my system is night and day faster with what I have now so the gig of ram just for braggin I would have to say is just that? "for bragging". and ariafrost what mobo are you considering getting that is really a sweet looking little box..?

I'm going socket 754 (A64) so I'm using this motherboard: AOpen s760GXm-S. Has everything I want, uses high quality components (like steel backplate) and has SilentTek (BIOS and windows software fan speed control). I don't know about Socket A motherboards, but this MSI m-ATX board looks good: Link to MSI Socket A motherboard

Good luck in your build!

XP 3000 CPU is fine for gaming. The video card is 80% of the setup.
Your current parts are ok for a game computer don't believe the hype that you need the news parts o have fun gaming. If you was happy wiht your only system then you will be happy with those parts in SFF.

I do like the chemming case, but I like the SHuttle and Biostar case better. Just my option on cases. If you have not gotten the 3000XP cpu I would hold off on that.
Athlon 64 would cost little more, but would be upgradable for year.
If you already got the 3000xp then go for a system where you can have 3-4 ram slots.
moving for 512 to 756 or 1024 MB of ram would help your system. Not sure if any of the prebuild SFF have more then 2 slot for ram. But it would checking out.
Either way have fun.

Hey ariafrost, can you please tell me the name of the Chenming case you were trying to link there? I looked around newegg but the only other Chenming cube I see listed is the 118 which you also mentioned, but that takes a 80mm fan instead of the 120mm.

Have you read any reviews on the Antec Aria? I like the clean Shuttle like looks of it but I also like the Chenming's 2 5 1/4 bays. If the Aria is really that bad on cooling I'll pass on it.

Now I just need to find a decent s939 motherboard 🙂

Hmmm... the windowed case no longer seems to be available (darn) - the non-windowed version has 120mm fan though, as reviews around the web confirm - if you'll look the PSU has a 80mm and the case fan is significantly bigger. (Rear). Yeah, still looking for a decent s939 mobo here too... supposedly more good ones coming out towards end of this month. I'm going to hold off my build until mid-July.

Ah you're right about the 120mm fan, I was checking Chenming's site and they list it as such. I guess if you want a window then the Aspire cases are the way to go. The only thing that would make either of those cases perfect though is if you could get them w/o a PSU 🙂

I'll have to wait a little longer as well if some more mATX boards are due out. So far I only see a couple of ATi chipset based boards which I'm not sure I'd buy and a couple of Foxconn nForce4 based boards which look all right. I just wish the Foxconn?s had 2 PCI slots instead of 1 PCI & 2 PCI-E slots.

Anyway thanks for all the info, I?ve been looking all around for alternatives to the Shuttle box which could use more then 2 slots and I wasn?t aware that these cube cases existed. I had been leaning toward Monarch Computer?s Hornet cases up to this point.

I like the ATI 200 Express board the fit in the micro cases. First they all take 4 dimm slot s you can keep you memory and just add more. Second I like have On baord Video. I kniow I might not need it but I recycle my old computer to family so I can usually keep my video card and let them use my old system. I also don't need any of the "extra" feature of the Nforce 4 mother boards, so in the end I perfer the ATI 200 express.

They have it newegg for around 80 (when last I looked). Good luck
