SAN FRANCISCO?Authorities are closing down both directions of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge after a cable snapped on the upper deck of the span.

California Highway Patrol Officer Peter Van Eckhardt says the bridge will be closed for at least 24 hours so crews can try to repair the cable that snapped during the evening commute.

Van Eckhardt says the closure comes after a cable and a large piece of metal fell onto the westbound direction of the roadway about around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Before the closure, traffic was already backed up into Oakland.

One person was shaken up and at last one vehicle damaged in the incident.

The cable snapped near the same section of bridge that was the scene of a big rig crash earlier this month.

Well, that doesn't give confidence...

"Authorities said they are shutting down the Bay Bridge in both directions after pieces of the cantilever section fell during the late-afternoon commute, striking three vehicles on the upper deck, the California Highway Patrol said.

Caltrans officials said the parts that fell were two high-strength rods and a saddle that were part of the emergency repair that delayed the opening of the bridge on Labor Day weekend."

Wow, would hate to see a bridge of that level of recognition have a total failure.

They should have fixed it right the first time. It sounds like an engineering error to me.

Most of the bridges in the US are in a serious state of disrepair. The sorry state of US bridges really came to light after the tragedy in Minnesota a few years ago.

Yes, that really sucked. I remember going over to that and seeing what happened.

Unfortunately, politically, it is easier to get moneys allocated to rebuild a collapsed bridge than it is to get moneys allocated to maintain the same bridge.

It sucks, but it is true.

Yeah :(

Just another reason we need to spend $ revamping our infrastructure.
Yep, bridges, roads, highways, freeways, dams, etc.

The NTSB report on that failure is really fascinating. Ever since, there has been a huge push to repair bridges across the country. I know in Metro Detroit it seems like every freeway overpass has been worked on in the last 18 months.

the MN bridge failed because it was under-designed and the flaws slipped through QC.

but in general, most bridges are old, decrepit, and are in a state of disrepair

These are where the stimulas funds should have gone to. Improving the public infrastructure instead of paying for memorials

railways, tunnels, transit systems, water purification facilities, gas/water/sewer/steam lines, electrical grid, levee systems, locks, ....

The list of infrastructure that needs attention is enormous.
