I've had mine a year as well. Just replaced all the toner cartridges at $100 each - ouch - more than I paid for the printer iself. But, the replacements have 3x as much, so I shouldn't have to do it again for 3 years (aka NEVER, because something way better will have come along since)

How well would this work as a photo printer. A home color laser at this price seems like a good option but i need to be able to print photos too.

Yeh anyone know how this would be for printing photos? I've avoided getting a photo printer because I hated having to change the inkjet cartridges so often and the quality was never as nice and clean as a (frickin) laser.

TIA

Maximum PC had a Ink Jet vs Minolta Color Laser. For text, graphics etc, the laster printer won it but for photos the inkjet did. Not that I'm surprised.

This or just about any laser printer would pretty much suck as a photo printer. The resolution and color reproduction would be worse than even a mediocre color inkjet.

This kind of printer is ideal for color newsletters, flyers, etc. Anything that requires large areas of a single color.

FYI, the newer 2400 is available on special at staples right now for $350. looks like higher resolution in a smaller package

Come on. There is no consumer-level laser printer in the world that is adequate as a photo printer. None. They all suck as photo printers. Some suck bigger time than others, but they all suck. If you need a photo printer, you either need an inkjet printer or a dye sublimation printer, or you need to have your photos printed by one of the zillions of labs now equipped to handle digital photos.

Once Costco started offering 19 cent 4x6 photos, printed on real photo paper using a real photo process (meaning the fading and print resolution issues associated with inkjets are gone), I tossed my inkjet printer for good. Now I have laser printers for everything but photos, and I get my photos printed at Costco.

I read in a review that this thing sucks as a photo printer (I was wondering about the same thing... photo quality). So stay away. I just get my photos done by a third party. 4x6's are cheapest usually at B&M stores but 8x10's and anything above that will be a LOT cheaper online. You can find some reputable places that do 8x10's for $3 or even $2.

Why stay away? Just know that it's a LASER PRINTER, with the particular characteristics of a LASER PRINTER. That means: fast, good quality for text, and very cheap per printed page. That also means poor photo printing.

As for larger prints: Costco does 8x12 for $1.99. Larger prints are, I believe, $2.99.

Oh, and the downsides to this PARTICULAR (2300W) laser printer are: 1) Duplexing is an option and is expensive; 2) Only one paper tray, not expandable; 3) 32mb memory, not expandable; 4) No networking, USB or parallel connectivity only; 5) No native postscript. If you buy the next model up (2300LW), you get expandable memory, networking built in, and slightly higher resolution spec (though no noticiable difference in print quality).

Laser printers under 4 grand are nowhere close when it comes to photo quality, but they do come close. Inkjet printer such as Canon i960 i9900 are the best in quality. Epson and HP inks do lasts longer in regards to fading, but those damn printers clogged like crazy and color is not as nice as Canon.

No, I just bought a toner refill (4500 page yield) for black from ebay, and it's about $35, this price already includes shipping/handling. You can get the color ones for same price in ebay.

I think the printer came with a starter cartridge with 1500 page yield, and it lasted me for more than 1 year.

This model is being closed out for 2400 which hit the shelves last week. I think the 2300W is better built. But for less than $300, color laser is getting CHEAP.

ALso people who complaint about photo ink in ink jet printers should know you can always buy generic ink off eBay for $1-2/color on a Canon 960i. Those who want to argue that generics fade and stuff, know I have watched my prints fade in 1 year in airconditioned office, away from sunlight even when I used factory cartidges from Canon and Canon Pro photo paper. Canon refuses to acknowledge their products are defective.

I have a Canon i810 and its a pretty awesome photo printer - but the ink refills are a big pain. it only costs about 25 cents per refill, but its messy. I have to glue gun the top refill hole, otherwise the ink leaks out the bottom. It seemed like I was refilling the cartridges every 2 weeks, before I finally had enough and bought a cheap BW laser. The inks themselves seem to print fine, but the whole refill thing is a pain. My next printer will be a color laser - with photos from the digital camera being printed online through Walmart.

I'd be wary of 3rd party toner refills. I doubt you'd get as many pages as OEM and probably void warranty. I use this printer for quick photo prints and large projects like an annual family calendar with photos. Certainly acceptable, especially on regular paper. For actual photos I want to display and keep, I use an HP Photosmart 1315. Nice prints. No fading on any I've ever printed in the moer than 3 years I've owned it.

I have the 1350 B&W, and I LOVE it. I seriously want a color. I will have to see if they take the same toner. if they do, I amm all over this deal

We have the 2300DL (parallel, USB and 10/100 LAN ports) and it's a fine printer. I have printed a lot of color pictures, maps, etc. and they look good on plain paper. As for actual photos, haven't really printed any of them. We use it for printing mostly business cards and our ads/price lists in color. Had it nearly a year on the starter toner.

When you decide to print photo, watch out paper you'll use. Inkjet Photo paper will kill the drum (melted coating is kind like glue), not always, but be warned.
