Severe laptop help needed! Sony PCG-SR33

friend wanted me to work on his Sony PCG-SR33 laptop...the situation is this. Laptop hard drive died, he got a replacement drive. It does not have a cd-rom, nor will it boot to usb. When I put in another laptop drive that has a good OS on it, it will not boot it...just hangs with a black screen.

my theory is that because the original hard drive had a "recovery partition", there was something on that drive that allowed it to boot properly, but without that special Sony crap it will not boot? Is this even feasible? I have never heard of a computer that you couldnt load your own OS onto?

so, any recommendations?

I've heard that some laptops put the bios on the harddrive instead of some dedicated flash. If that is the case, then you're screwed when your hard drive craps out. I don't have any experience with this personaly but maybe something you should look into for this particular model, seems like a possibility.
