severe lag in XP

normal system statistics:
game server takes 5% processing power
i get 64FPS in Half-Life (it's constant though, stays 64 in heavy action)

stats after i play a DVD:
game server takes 90% processing power
i get 4FPS in game (4 is lowest recordable amount possible, it's probably more like 1FPS though)

why would a DVD cause the system to lag so hard? the program running the DVD is closed and the DVD is not in the drive so wtf.?
