Several issues with my computer

Ok, I just upgraded my computer and installed Vista. I'm working out the issues and trying to get settled. I basically have everything working, including Internet, etc. I just downloaded all of the Windows Updates.

2 issues:

1. In the device manager, under "other devices," it shows "SM Bus Controller" with a yellow exclamation point. I tried to update the driver by having the computer look on the Internet, but it "didn't find anything." The SM Bus Controller is from the motherboard, so should I put in the CD that came with the motherboard?

2. My computer will not shut down. I tell it to shut down and the monitor will power off. However, the fans are still running and the blue light that shows the computer temperature on the front of the tower is still on. Typically everything shuts off when I shut down the computer.

Does the SM Bus Controller have anything to do with my computer not shutting down? How can I address these issues?

Did you load the motherboard drivers from the disk that came with the board? You will need to if you haven't. May be a good idea to go to the manufactures web page and look for any updated drivers.

Ok, I installed the intel chipset drivers and it no longer appears under "other devices" in the device manager. The "other devices" tab has completely disappeared.

However, I'm still having the computer shutdown issue. Monitor powers down, but the fans and lights are still running. Any other suggestions?

Hi again. We like inquisitive people. :thumbsup:

Try looking in your power options (control panel) and see if you are actually putting it into Hibernate mode when you shut down.

When you try to shut down, do you see the old "It's okay to turn off your PC" message before your monitor powers off?

I checked power options...I don't see anything where my computer would be programmed to hibernate rather than power down when I click on "start and shut down."

My computer does not tell me "it's ok to turn off your pc." When I click on "start" and the red button (to shut down), it just does it.

If you go to Device Manager and click the + next to Computer, does it say "ACPI xxx"?

Okay, heres a trick that works in 2000/XP but I don't know about Vista:

In Device Manager select "View Hidden Devices" and look for something like "NT APM Legacy Device". If it's disabled, enable it.

Also, in your BIOS under Power options does anything look amiss?

Anything in Power Saving settings that might be related to powering down or hibernation.

You are aware the default setting for that red button is stand-by and not shutdown, right?

Ah yes, Vista. I should've caught that.

Yes, the default is standby.

Uh, yeah, that's it. I was trained by XP for so many years to click on the red button to shut down. I didn't know it didn't carry over to Vista.
