I have a imac laying around, I think its 400mhz g3, 10 gig hard drive etc. Its blueberry to. I was thinking of loading linux (ubantu probably) adding a big (300gig) fire wire hard drive and using it to serve files around my small network maybe 2 or three computers. How well would a computer like this work for an application like that.

for serving files not much CPU is needed 400mhz should be more than enough to do what you want it to do.

Firewire is 400mbps.

Ethernet is 100mbps.

It's 4x faster than it needs to be :D

The drive will be fast enough, but that's a /really/ old computer... It's certainly worth a shot -- though you may want to set it up on its own and see how well it works before investing in the drive.

Should be fine. I've used Pentium 2's as server before and had no problems.

EDIT: notice what I'm using for a server (see sig).
