Seventeen, YM, and other teenage girl magazines. Does anyone find them stupid?

I find these magazines rather stupid, and don't think that they portray or send a good message. Sure they are not about sending positive messages, but since millions of teenage girls read them, they do have an effect.

These magazines, to some extent objectify women. I can't say the exact reason why I think so, but it is probably because they show that girls are not interested in any thing other than looks, guys and Hollywood. The magazines are just full of make-up tips. dress ideas, guy advice, latest Hollywood happenings and the occasional "Bash the Asian countries, girls are so suppressed over there".

The pictures of girls they show, set a concieved image in girls minds. They need to have a beautiful figure, clear acne free face, and great hair. Not to mention the expensive clothes, shoes and make up. Other wise they are going to be non-sexy, ugly, unpopular, and most of all they won't get a date for the all important, once in a life, with out which life will stop existing, event, The Prom.

Well they do have advice on how to look great for all sizes, but the pictures are only of cute anorexic girls, who by all standards are mentally sick. But these magazines show that as an ideal, an impossible ideal.

I would not be too surprised if the typical insecurity girls feel about being ugly is fueled by such magazines.

Although one cannot resist noticing the fundamental difference between guy and girl magazines. Girl magzines talk about "So you meet a cute guy, now what?" or "Find out what he would like as a gift", while Guy magazines talk about "So you have her in bed, now what?" or "Learn how to unhook a bra and turn her on while doing that".

Yeah but that image is everywhere esle too. Maxim does the same thing, but oh...so nice. Hell, look at the babe thread someone started.

It's a lot more than a few teen oriented magazines that make girls feel like that's what they should be/what guys want. It's everything.

BTW: Check out my contribution to the babe thread....yum. :D

They are ridiculous. I have flipped through my sister's mags before and the advice they give about guys is downright LAUGHABLE.

I don't buy those kinds of magazines for myself or my daughters...

Style is something personal and unique and should be created by the individual, not copied from the masses.

I do read the occasional 'womens' magazine such as Ladies Home Journal and Redbook.

However, I find Architectural Digest, Bon Appetit, and National Geograhic Traveler to be MUCH more interesting.... hopefully, my kids will grow up to like them, too.

As for 'junk' magazines.... I do have to say this... The Fashion Police in Us Weekly magazine is HILARIOUS!!!!! If you have never seen that feature, you must!

Nice pics? skinny little anorexic girls? Actually in the pictures they are like 21 year old anorexics trying to appeal to a 15 year old audience. It's stupid....i hope they realize they can't look like that unless they starve themselves and grow up for a few more years.

<< Thes mags are like the maxim for the younger generation of teenage boys. >>

Vato, Maxim is for kids who cannot legally buy Playboy.

Haha, I was reading a Seventeen I think it was, and you know what it said?

Some girl liked some guy at a party and wanted to know how to get his attention. They said something about lipstick and other crap to wear/do her hair or something.

Lipstick though!!!!!!!!!! WTF cares about lipstick! God.. I hope these magazine publishers burn in hell.
