I wonder if we'll see this before CVT autos take over the marketplace!

Five speeds don't cut it at all, I was ALWAYS pushing the clutch and "shifting" to a non existant gear. :Q

i find five quite enough thanks, sixth would be nice for country cruising, but having six around town would be kinda annoying, seven would be really annoying ;)

the point is to have closer ratio and still achieve a high top speed (such as 200 mph without electronic limitations)

it shoudl cost about the same as a 6 speed, maybe a bit more. Afterall it's about how many gears you have in your tranny and how much power it can handle.

You'd be shifting constantly. 6 is enough.

How would 6 be annoying? Just don't use the 6th gear.

It isn't that simple. All the lower gears are closer ratio so from a stop sign up to 40-50mph you are still rowing through one more gear than a taller geared 5 spd. Trust me, you would notice it if you've driven nothing but 5 spd cars all your life.

Edit-They don't just add a taller top gear to make a transmission a 6 speed. They redesign the entire gearbox to make better use of the engine's powerband. It generally results in closer ratio gears down low and no higher top speed so you just end up shifting more and possible getting better power off corners.

I dunno.... I think we'll see the CVT become more popular instead of going to gearboxes with more fixed gears...

yes because we all need cars that go 200

I seriously doubt a vast majority of cars ever hit 100.

You would hope so, but the six speed in My Golf 4Motion was woefully incorrect for the power delivery of the car.
