Or it's not that bad and that's just how we perceive it? I see children walking home from school all the time, no issues.
Yeah that's about all they can do. But you are a youngster yourself, baby faced and barely out of the nest. You have no idea what it use to be like.

A lot more crimes are reported on in the media, where 50 or more years ago it wouldn't get mentioned if it came out in the open in the first place.
Look at all the pedophilia scandals in the Catholic Church. Many of those happened quite some time ago, but the kids were either told to keep their mouths shut or weren't believed in the first place, if they'd dare tell anyone at all. Now the moment it leaks out the media will be all over it.
The level of crime may be similar, at least percentage wise, but you hear more about it now. Also thanks to the internet, which means we can see news from all over the world within minutes after it happened. Rather than a big crime making it to the local newspaper and not beyond (if the local newspaper wasn't owned by a friend of the criminal and kept quiet about it in the first place).

A lot of crimes simply didn't get reported, statistics weren't kept, or the victim was blamed and it was swept under the carpet. Or the victim was killed or locked up in an asylum to keep them from saying anything.

Society is more dangerous. 20 years ago children could walk home alone from school, not today. 50 years ago you could leave your doors unlocked and wide open and still be safe from buglers and robbers, not today. 20 years you we didn't have all of these child abductions, rapes, and killings. Society is much more dangerous. Parents need to watch every corner, because predators are lurking everywhere now.

this more a perception than reality brought to by the 24 hour news cycle we have now where they have to have filler to hold onto the the viewers who would otherwise get bored and flip channels.

I am horrified that someone would inflict something like violence & death on an innocent human being. There should be understanding and the constant drive to work towards peace.

And, even if this article points out that things are "not that bad" - it is still the loss of innocent human life. I am not talking about those who are actually fighting the war, but of the innocents invovled. Even if a war means ONE innocent will die, I still do not consider the effort to be worth it.

If you look at 9/11 for example; do you think there are more or less Islamic terrorists fighting against the US since 2001? For every innocent casualty, there are family members tied to that person. Who will turn to the fanatic's side in anger. Now, they won't pick up a rifle and start shooting at American soldiers. But, when an inrugent is setting up a road side bomb, and it is witnessed by someone who just lost their child or left leg to an American bomb - will that someone say something?

I picked out a few quotes I liked, but read the article before disagreeing, it's short. I think we all know the posters who won't bother reading the article before doing so. ;)

My comment on this article is that it's interesting and thought-provoking, if not, at times, truly conclusive.

It will be an interesting read. Thank you.

"The World Is a More Violent Place Than It Used to Be."
Anyone who actually believed that was a fool.

I agree with the world being a less violent place. On average globally that is the case. In reality, from location to location on the planet and from time to time, the violence can vary depending on the situation.

The issue is being spoiled. Because i like history, i noticed a lot of the people who moan and complain, never really knew poverty or having to make decisions about going with the bike to your work in order to save money to buy decent food. Most people do not seem to realize that even if you do not have the money for a car, a huge tv screen or any type of game console with monthly subscription but instead having food, a house and every day clean underwear and clothes is a huge improvement. People have lost the desire to plan ahead long term because today might be the last day to live. At least that is how they feel like it.

Peace is not profitable :sneaky:

Peace is much more profitable than war. That is why our defense system is supposed to protect the peace. It's a basic business principle whether on the local, state, national, or international level... stability and security is good for business. Get your left wing head out of your ass.
