I spent the better part of last night trying to get a desktop PC which is misbehaving going. I still cannot get it to find the DHCP server on the RT314 and get an IP in the 192.168.000.*** range. It keeps crapping out and taking an internal IP in the range of 169.***.***.***. So I then tried to set a static IP. I set the RT314 to dynamically assign IPs via DHCP above 192.168.0.10 thereby giving me 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.9 available for static connections. That works great for the laptops using DHCP, they all connect and work fine. However my main desktop still cannot get onto the net, see the other laptops, or ping the RT314 when I assign it a static IP of 192.168.0.2.
I am using Windows 2000 Pro and removed all networking protocols, clients, etc, then shutdown, and rebooted. I then installed TCP/IP, client for MS networks, and file/print sharing. I manually assigned the IP address, set the subnet mask at 255.255.255.0 and the default gateway at 192.168.0.1. I did not assign DNS servers as I was unsure which to use (192.168.0.1 or 24.10.70.49 [@HOME's], if I used any. I did not change any properties under the Advanced button. At one point I discovered that the system was using the 255.255.0.0 subnet mask when I ran the ipconfig /all command.
After reading that explanation, is there something that I am obviously missing or should change to allow my desktop to not only see the other PCs, but ping the RT314 and access the net?
Thanks...(again)
