i have a amd 6000 processor rig....and i desperately need to upgrade to a new system since my system is chugging when i'm running lightroom 3 and sony vegas....

i was going to go w/a macbook pro but I can't justify the expensive price when i can get a killer desktop for under half that price.

well...what do you guys recommend for a system setup? i am looking at the i7 950 vs the 875k....since they are on sale at microcenter.

or..should i wait for sandybridge? will it really expensive when it comes out?

thanks so much everyone....

AS i have no knowledge in those programs... But the cpu you are looking at are almost identical.

The 875k and the 950 are almost the same cpu.
The 875k is a mid stream, enthusiast product... meaning a middle product meant to fill the shoes of the overclocker @ middle price ranges.

The 950 is intel's workhorse. This cpu requires a typically more expensive board, and will also offer 1 last upgrade potential.... ie. hex core.

The ultimate difference is in the VTT in which the cpu can tollerate that helps you overclock.

Should you wait for Sandy Bridge?
Well, to be honest, do you intend to Overclock the system at all or run it all in stock?

How are you on timeframe?
The person who waits never loses, unless he waits too long.
Problem is when is it too long to wait? :D

If you see yourself getting greedy later on in the future, get a 950, upgrade to a hexcore later on, and be happy with that for at least 2 yrs when 2011 fully matures.

If you can afford to wait, wait to see what 1155 SB brings, the worst that can happen is your 950 will drop in price and be cheaper to aquire when the 1155 cpu's come out.

However wait too long, and there will be no more 950's to get new, as intel will stop making them.

THanks for the awesome reply!

I do not plan to overclock unless i can guarantee my system is rock solid stable.

i don't want to be editing photos or rendering video just to have it crash! :(

I do want to upgrade..but if i can hold out 2-3 more months for the newest stuff....then i won't have to upgrade for a while...my system is very old and archaic, and rendering videos takes a very long time on my system :(

Any sane person will only overclock to a speed that IS stable. So overclock/ test, then go up or down in speed, depending on the results. Once stable, and the highest you can go, then either leave it, or do what I do, and lower it a hare for safety's sake.

well adding more cores might help, but that depends on the software your using. You might want to see if a higher clocked dual core would be superior to a quad becuase both of those programs IIRC do not handle threading very well.

John,
What operating system ?

I use Vegas 10 with Win7 64 - and it uses all 12 HT cores of an i7 980x ..

Utilization varies, depending on the codec.

single threaded performance of an i7 950 is signficiantly higher than a 6000+ according to Bench, you'll see a significant improvement on each individual core plus 2 more cores on a 950. This is already a significant improvement.

Waiting for SB will most likely offer only a small improvement over i7 at the same clock speed, and I don't expect huge clockspeed gains until the move to 28nm.

I guess I'm saying that a 950 should be okay given how much improvement you'll see. Who knows what SB will cost, there's not really much competition at the i7-950 level of performance, so there's no pressure for Intel to be inexpensive.

If you can get both for similar price, the 9xx series has tri-channel memory :) Doesn't make a huge difference in many things, but it's nice to have 6 slots for ram rather than 4.
