Setup for a SIMPLE home network

I have two PCs, both running W2K Pro. One is a laptop and the other is a desktop. I also have a cable internet connection. What I would like to be able to do, as cheaply and easily as possible, is setup them up to share the internet connection (when they are both plugged in) and be able to share files (when they are both plugged in) across the network so that I can backup data from the laptop onto the PC.

Is there a router or similar device cabable of this? Or, is there a simpler setup that might work well?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I know I know I know...search is my friend. I was just being lazy. I will suffer the punishments of the mods now..ahem.
