Setup and Fine Tuning a Monitor

I have a Dell 1901FP monitor, running with a Sapphire Radeon 9600 256M 128-bit DDR AGP 4X/8X card. Knowing that everyone has their personal preferences, does anyone have any suggestions for getting the best performance out of their monitor?
I'm running now at 1280 X 1024, at 60MHz, which is what the manual recommends. I see I can run it at 75MHz if I preferred. Any reason why one should or shouldn't?
Also, I notice that from the factory most of the settings for color and brightness are set at 100%. I don't know if this is laziness on Dell's part, or the way to an optimal picture. Is there perhaps a website geared towards tweaking a monitor?
Also, isn't there a site around for testing for dead pixels? Thank you.
