My buddy and I have been arguing over the original air date of a commercial for more than a decade. The spot in question:

I maintain it aired in the late '80's. He's adamant it was after '90. If you can definitively prove the original air date, I will PayPal you $100.

I have contacted brand managers at both RVI and P&G who had worked on the product; both suspect it was late '80's. I spoke directly with Virginia Hey, the model/actress in the spot; she suspects it was the late 80's. I reached out to Advertising Standards Canada; their records only go back as far as '90 and they have no record of the commercial. The link above suggests '89, but that's far from conclusive.

So, settle this argument with definitive proof and I will PayPal you $100. Godspeed, little ones.

Don't know that you can get an answer that would be used in a courtroom, but everything points to 1989.

Another link with this quote:
"Virginia has appeared in the U.S. commercials for Oil Of Olay for ten years in the 1980s."

Appeared in the US in a well-known "Oil Of Olay" television commercial for 10 years in the 1980s, in which she played a schoolteacher who is mistaken by one of her former students as one of his own former classmates. She has appeared in 57 TV commercials in Australia and the UK.

This is a no brainer. Your friend is wrong.

TOP Gun, Iron Eagle, cheezy Air Force Oil of Olay commercial ... 80's.

WTF is definitive proof? You want receipts from the set? A video of someone holding a newspaper next to the TV? HA!

I remembered this!

You're going all out to prove him wrong. It seems he probably is wrong, how much money did you and him bet over this?

I know. I need definitive proof.

Define "definitive"

Most Google searches indicate 1989. This would be enough to prove a point to 99% of the population. What more could you possibly need to prove your argument?
