Settings beyond the range of monitor. How do I change?

I hooked up my new 22" monitor to my computer which was running on a 17" and I installed the new monitor's driver and changed the display settings to a resolution and refresh rate that is not supported by the 17". I later hooked up the box to my 17" and found that it would not display Windows. I rebooted in Safe Mode and couldn't find a way to change the settings so that I could boot to Windows 2000 with the 17". The only workaround I can find is to put it back on the 22" monitor and change the settings. I figure there must be a way to do this with the 17" attached but I can't find it. What am I missing? Thanks...

I don't understand why, when booted in "safe mode", you couldn't reset the screen resolution and refresh rate to something suitable for the 17" monitor...

I tried that next and to my surprise it still didn't work. Before Windows 2000 completed booting I get a message from my monitor that the settings were out of range:

fH 106.3 kHz too high
FV 84.8 Hz

I was about to give up and post again and I tried some more things. I uninstalled the 22" monitor, no help. I uninstalled the 22" monitor's driver, still wouldn't sync. Then I went into safe mode and uninstalled the video driver, nVidia 40.72. That did the trick. What a hassle. I think I'll try to leave my first system on the 17" monitor. I'd like to set things up so I can get my email from either computer, but I don't know if that's practical. I'm sure it's doable if I have both systems on and networked, but I won't always want to have both systems on! I ordered my router yesterday...
