i am helping a friend who has a laptop that is crapping out on her...and she wants to save all her info...it totals 11 gigs of data and i don't feel like FTP'ing all that or buring 30 CD's lol

I have tried the home network wizard in windows but for what ever reason i am clueless. Her laptop is a compaq persario X1000 with XP on it

i have XP pro on my rig and i am connected to the net via 5 port switch and cable modem

can anyone give me some help on this issue...I am getting frustrated and don't know where to start to get the two computers to start talking to each other so I can transfer the files to my computer safely

thanks so much in advance

Make sure that the computers are on the same workgroup. You could try a crossover cable from her laptop to your computer and transfer the files that way.

Open "Properties" for the Start Menu from the right-click popup context menu.
Click Customized>Advanced
Enable "My Network Places" in the list.
Save the setting and click Start>My Network Places
Click "View workgroup computers" from the Network Tasks area on the left.
Browse around until you find her computer.
On her computer, move the files into the "Shared Documents" folder, which can be accessed through "My Computer".
Back on your computer, move them out and into a folder on your local hard drive.

Do you have a router, or are you connected with a plain switch? Do you have multiple IP addresses from your ISP?

If you want to disconnect from the Internet and just use two ports on the switch, you should be able to setup the transfer manually.

Manual setup:
Set IP addresses to 192.168.0.1 & 192.168.0.2, both subnet masks to 255.255.255.0.
Set NETBIOS over TCP/IP enabled in TCP/IP advanced properties.
Install File & Print sharing.
Share the required resources in My Computer.
Make sure you have an account with the name/password used on the other machine, or enable the guest account for the transfers.
