Setting up Win2k for multiple users...

I'm new to the multiple users thing and had a few questions. I have a family member who thinks he knows more than he does, and keeps screwing with things and messing up Windows2k... so I've decided to create multiple users, and give him limited access so he can't do that anymore. My question is... should I install the applications he'll be using from the Administrator account? Or should I do it from his account and just take away his ability to install programs after I have all his junk installed?

If I'm not mistaken W2K requires admin privies to install software.
Just set up a regular user acct. and double check the privies before cutting the user loose on the system.

you do not have to logon as an administrator to install programs within win2k. Some programs however do require it (eg. most anti-virus software). it will probably be easiest to install the programs as an admin and then change the specific program permissions seperately.

To prevent this family member from causing serious damage, create their account using the "restricted user" group. This will allow them to run programs that you have installed, but not let them install programs or make changes to the system.

hopefully this should keep your system nice and healthy for a long time to come.

Thanks... I'll try it... but, can I set it up so they don't have access to certain programs? If so, how do I do that? The Help in Win2k is a joke... and so is MS's web site.

If you're using NTFS file system you can restrict a user's access to selected files / directories through their Security settings..
