Setting up Win2k for LAN party

Went to a LAN party this weekend but had some trouble with Win2k and was wondering if anyone might have suggestions.
Problem was that once the LAN was setup and all the IPs configured, I could see all the other machines (Win9x boxes) but they kept timing out when they tried to ping my IP. When I flipped over to 98SE and got it configured everthing when fine and we had a great time, not alot of sleep but a great time.
Since 98 is my backup OS, it wasn't configured and I had to reinstall most of the games and they weren't as tweaked as my Win2k setup, so I'd like to try and figure out what happened.
 
Some advise from a avid LAN Party attendee.....format a hard drive and install winme on it and all your games that you play. Then install all the cracks,patches,and mods. Dont install anything else on it and use it only for the lan parties. If you can get your hands on a 15-20 gig 7200 ata100 or ata66 drive use it for that reason only...go to the fs/ft forum and find one for under $100.00....cant go wrong with that!

ps: You will have an advantage over the clutered hard drives filled with porn,appz,warez, and mp3zzzzzzzzzzzz......
 
Thats the way I go, except win98. Its great. It is the worse thing in the world to have a windows2k problem at a lan party. Last 2 partys I went to before I got my new 20gb for lan partys I spend the night before getting the bastard system working.

Thanks for the idea, sounds like a good one. That way I don't have to hide all the porn in case people stumble on (go looking for) it. :Q
I'm guessing that there is some service I don't have running normally that prevented the other computers from seeing me even though I could ping them.
