Setting up surround sound speakers

When setting up surround sound speakers on your tv, do you place the speakers/stands directly next to the tv, at ear level? Do you you space them 5-10 ft away from the tv, and have them lined up with the speakers behind say, a couch?

Right now, my rear's are spaced farther apart than my two fronts are.

what do you mean by "surround sound speakers"?

you mean rear speakers or the mains?

normally you would place them few feet away from the TV .

but that would also depend on size of the TV.

and your receiver might have a setting to set distance for each speakers as well.

give us more info.
