Since HDMI cables are really not that expensive, I dont understand why Sony does not pack them with the box and save the consumer the trouble.

The same reason why Microsoft doesn't do it, $1 or $2 times millions is a lot of money.
 
Composite cables aren't free to make either. 😛 More then likely they aren't packed in with HDMI's in hopes that you'll be a moron and buy the "Officially licensed for" brand for 50 bones.

This reason right here. I just bought a 6 pack of 6 footers for like $10 a long time ago and only one didn't want to work right. Tested it on 2 blu ray players, a 360 and my laptop to a 40" 1080p LCD. The other 5 worked just fine..and as a matter of fact I have one hooked up to my brand new PS3 I got for Christmas and it looks gorgeous on my 55" LED in the living room.
