Setting up PPTP to a Cisco RV220w - having trouble!

Hi guys

I am trying to set up my cisco router (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/routers/ps9923/ps11025/data_sheet_c78-630461.html) as a PPTP VPN server so that I can PPTP in and access my home network from work.

I have a dynamic IP so I have a dynDNS account (which is configured in my router).

-have enabled PPTP and created an appropriate username/password
-have assigned an IP range, but am curious - default range is 192.168.1.1-192.168.1-200. I think I did the right thing by specifying 192.168.10.1-192.168.10.10 for the PPTP connections?

When I try to connect, both through PPTP by using my dynDNS domain and with cisco's quickVPN client (and I did remember to change the connection type for quickvpn on my router), it throws an error. Have I overlooked something obvious?

What error are you getting? Are there logs?
Is the firewall allowing incoming PPTP requests?
If you want to PM me with specific information, and if you have a test useraccount, i'd be willing to help you troubleshoot it.

When I try and connect using the Win8 connect to a VPN function:
Error 800: The remote connection was not made because the attempted VPN tunnels failed. The VPN server might be unreachable. If this connection is trying to use an L2TP/IPSec tunnel, the security parameters required for IPSec negotiation might not be configured properly.

Router has a selectable dropdown box under the user account page to switch to QuickVPN authentication. Tried this, get this error:
Failed to establish a connection. This could be caused by one of the following:
1. Incorrect Password
2. No Valid IP for the network card.
3. Incorrect server address
4. Win Vista/7 with Windows Firewall disabled, which disabled IPSec service.
5. Local IP address conflicts with subnet of remote VPN server (this and #2 are why I asked about the IP ranges in OP)

edit: And if nobody here can help figure this out I may well take you up on that, I am pretty new at this whole advanced networking business

Lithium, got your PM but I apparently cannot send one till I have posted 25 times :(

Update: I have successfully got my laptop at work to "connect". Trouble is, I can't seem to browse or in fact discover any network resources connected to my home network.

When I browse the network, it is just my work network. Any idea what I am doing wrong?

The network browser relies on NetBIOS (or DNS) resolution, which will not work over a pptp VPN unless you use a WINS server.

If you were to directly access something via IP, chances are it would work properly.

Forgive my ignorance - what is a WINS Server, what does it do, and how do I get one?

EDIT: Okay, Google says it is Windows Internet Name Service, which enables looking stuff up on a network by its name rather than IP/DNS address. Every reference I have seen to it seems to imply that it can only be set up on the windows server OS...so am I screwed, short of setting up a server box?

No, you can access things by IP directly.

Or use a local hosts file.

Part of the idea of public forums is that the public can benefit fro the common knowledge of the users.

Resorting to PMs based solution defeats this purpose.

Right - so I have tried doing this by direct IP, at least in the limited way in which I understand how. I have keyed in 192.168.1.3 using windows explorer, which opens a firefox tab (the address of the machine that has my desired resources on it, a win7 desktop with a shared data drive). Connection simply times out. Also tried adding a network location, no dice.

Am I misunderstanding how this whole thing works, or is it likely there is a configuration problem I haven't addressed yet?

I set up an RV120w for PPTP access, no problems with dyndns - when specifying the ip address range, I gave a range that was within the same subnet as the internal network.

Meaning what I described above there, or meaning that if your machines behind the router were in the 192.168.1.1-192.168.1.10 range, you also specified that range while setting up PPTP on the RV120?
