Setting up Per to Per network using CAT5

Operandi

Diamond Member

Me and a Friend of mine are trying to setup a simple network using just two NICs and a CAT5 cable. We tried connecting the two machines but that but cant seem to get them to see each other. I?ve heard that the cable has to modified to for it to be used in a per to per configuration, if so how is this done? Also my machine wasn?t set up for any type of networking, protocols, settings ect. So I?m not really sure what I have to have done for it to be network ready.

Any info would help thanx.

<overgeneralized but i hope it helps get you started>
-make sure tcp/ip and client for microsoft netowrks is installed
-set one ip to 192.168.0.1 and the other to 192.168.0.2
-to connect 2 directly like that you need a crossover cable
-you will need to be on the same subnet mask - 255.255.255.0

HomePCLAN is also a good site for step-by-step networking instructions...

And yes, you need a crossover CAT5 cable if you are connecting 2 PCs directly... normal CAT5 doesn't work...
