I am running Windows XP Pro. I have a few folders shared on the network, but I would like to password protect them so only certain users can access them. I can't figure out how to do this in XP Pro. It was really simple in 98. I search the help documents and found nothing except how to access password protected folders. How do I setup a password on a specific forlder?

Windows 98 uses share-level passwords by default, that is each share is assigned an individual password for access.

Access in 2K/XP is user level. Individual users/groups are granted access to a folder and only they can access it. Disable simple file sharing, go into the security tab on the folder's properties page, then you can grant access to specific users.

If you could be a bit more specific about who is going to access the files and how many shares there are, there may be easier ways to set it up.

Good luck.

Basically, I set up a server to run LAN games. The prblem is that it is in a closet. I want be able to access its files, but I don't want anyone else to because they have no idea how to run it. Is there a way for me to remotely access the whole system, without having to buy PC Anywhere? If not, just accessing the files will work. I can get to the server well enough to start some programs on it.

Ah, winXP has a wonderful feature built in called 'remote desktop.'
To enable it, go into your system properties, and the 'remote' tab.
In 'Remote Desktop', check the 'Allow Users to connect to this PC Remotely' box and click apply.
If you then go to another machine connected on the network and run Remote Desktop Connection in start menu->programs->accessories->communication you can connect to the machine and do pretty much anything you could do locally.

As fas as accessing the files goes, make sure that the user you log on to your system with has an account on the server with the same credentials (username and password.) Then go into the security properties for each shared folder and make sure that the right people have access.

On a workgroup, by default, Windows XP uses whats called simple file sharing. Disable that and the file sharing system will resemble that of Win2K's. Its more complex then that of Win9x, but more secure and more configurable.

Tools > Folder Options > View (tab) > Use Simple File Sharing [Uncheck it].
