Setting up Netflix

A family member wants Netflix. I've never looked into this field except for the past 5 mins looking at things I possibly would need. The Blu-Ray player has a Lan port. I have an extra Router 2.4GHz wireless that's Wireless G. I could possibly stream Netflix to this spare Wireless G Router but then what else would I need? The Blu-Ray player will have to be on for Netflix to work? And it will get audio, too?

Thanks

if the blu-ray player has a netflix app.... you could either route ethernet cable to the blu-ray, or get your router to support wireless ethernet bridge (or dd-wrt/tomato support, which has that)

otherwise, something like a Roku or Chromecast would work too

:hmm: the router is a Linksys Wireless Cable Gateway 200

EDIT: it has no WAN port, just the coaxial interface/protocol then 4 LAN ports, + the wireless.. The Modem has it's mac address, and then their is a Mac address for the router

The blu-ray player is a computer -- it connects through the gateway just like a PC would. You plug it into one of the LAN ports, it connects directly to the internet, ignoring your PC.

Yeah, I was just trying to see if my Linksys would work then it occured to me that it needs to have a WAN port in the first order of things, to work. It appears it doesn't even support Bridge mode or Access Point.

So what would be better? Some crap like Roku, Apple TV (was suggested), or a router like an Asus RT N66u, or the latest Asus AC66U ? I mean if we are going to have to spend ~ 100$ on a piece of crap like they suggest why not get something smooth that can be used later on down the road after netflix!?

EDIT: also I'm running segregated routing. And the second router which Netflix would stream from is wireless G, is G fast enough for Streaming EVERYthing?

EDIT2: so the laptop the family member uses has HDMI output, and is on the network. I think we have this solved. It will just be a poor mans Netflix bounced out from the laptop screen to the TV but it will work and be the cheapest route.

I hope this works.

Thanks all! 🙂

my girlfriend has this same exact issue at her house. Blu -ray player in the living room has netflix app, bu no wifi only a standard eth. port...router is a long way away, so far it just hasn't been used. She has a chromecast now so has been using that. If there is some cheap solution to get the blu ray player working that would be cool. Otherwise it is worthless.

Just picked up a Roku (the 2XS, in particular). Works fine with (strong) wireless-G signal. Haven't even used our HTPC for a couple weeks now. Amazon Instant video and Netflix, plus some PBS channels, BBC, etc.

Or just use powerline networking if you can get a pair of adapters for cheap, I am pleasantly surprised with the ones we got.

Roku To Excess, I like it!

But seriously BTRY B, don't spend more than $20 trying to get the Blu-Ray player to work out when a dedicated streaming box like a Roku starts at $40.

I actually didn't look into those boxes. This other family member said that they start at around 100$ for something like that or Apple TV.. that's kinda what started this whole thing. The 100$ imaginary item..

Thanks all for the responses so far.

No but we are considering one.

One thing I want to ask about, are there streaming issues with it?

I haven't had any issues that weren't caused by my cable provider. Netflix plays in HD streaming over the G router (I haven't tried my N router, I don't even think my TV supports N).
