Setting up my own cloud Asus ac68U

I certainly do not want to use some net cloud somewhere that belongs to somebody else. I would also like to save some money as I have SO MUCH comp gear laying around. Is there a way to make a cloud on my network that is VERY simple to use for my wife without FTP clients and such so her pics are uploaded automatically. I really like the whole WD MyCloud setup but I think I have enough crap laying around to make my own. My router is an Asus Ac68U. Are there apps out there that act like Google photos (auto upload photos and docs) to my own server at home via web or network?
