Setting up multiple OS's

I want to be able to run XP and Vista, but I already have a good install of XP running.

Is it a good idea to just install Vista to the same HDD?

It would be possible to install it to an empty 80GB HDD, but does that mess up the drive lettering and how everything is setup?

Any suggestions?
