Setting up Level 2 Switch

I have a Linksys 2224 Layer 2 Management 24 port switch and some management cable. I've never programmed a real switch before. I printed out the manual and I can't figure out what to do.

My options are programming it via Hyperterminal/Telnet using the serial port or http. It appears that I need to do it via Hyperterminal because I do not know what the IP address of the switch is.

I installed Hyperterminal but I have no idea what to do after that. I'm not sure I have this cable hooked up correctly either. I also have no idea what to do in Hyperteminal.

Any help is much appreciated!

do you have a serial port on your computer?
If not, hyperterminal is a no-go.
If you do have an active serial port, configure the port in hyperterminal per trhe instructions for your switch.
Since it is only a L2 switch, you could just leave it alone. There is not much in the way of management in there really.

you should be able to have it shut down ports after hours, just depends on what features it has.

Read the manual. The switch probably defaults to a specific IP address or gets one from DHCP. From there you can telnet or use a browser to manage it and set the IP that you want.
