Setting up LAN with roadrunner cable service

I tried to setup four computers on NAT using Roadrunner's service. So i hooked the one laptop up to the switch/router and put all the settings into the Linksys router/switch. Well, it didn't work. The only thing I could ping was the router's address (192.168.1.1) and the cable modem's IP and gateway address. I couldnt ping anything on the outside via the web or even RR's DNS servers. I tinker around with it some more and finally got it to resolve domain names, but it was very slow. I got a whole lot of "Request Timed Out" along the ways.

I ended up connecting her laptop directory to the modem.

Here's my question. It seems her laptop (Windows ME) knows where to pull the ip addy and gateway addy from. I was looking for a software that would've been isntalled by the RR installer but couldnt find anything. I'm wondering if I have to uninstall this software in order for it to work via NAT. What i didnt try was to see if I could get another laptop to work on the NAT. I have DSL connection with Directtv and I had to uninstall the software that came with it before I went ahead and installed my router/switch.

Any ideas?

Take the MAC from the PC and not from the cable modem, correct?

I'm on RR using a linksys 4 port router. You shouldn't need to clone the mac address. Just unplug your cable modem from the power outlet let it sit for a minute. Make sure the cable modem is now plugged into your WAN port on the router. Now plug the cable modem back into the power outlet, it will do its little startup diagnostic, and read the new mac address from the router. Most cable companies store your mac address info in the modem itself so when you turn it off like that it erases it and you start fresh.

Worked like a charm for me. :-D

Let's say I screw up somehow, how can I go back to the original settings? This girl doesnt even know where things are (IP address, gateway addres, her login name). So in case I screw up she wouldnt be able to tell me information i would need in order to put it back to its orginal state.

For the linksys configuration, should I leave the ip address to automatically discover?

okay,

Basically for RR in my experience, you do not need her login name or passwords or gateways or mac addresses. In the linksys router let it automatically get her IP from the RR servers. If you need to copy her current settings before doing the router, try network properties and just write them down, but i bet its all just left to auto detect aka. it will automatically obtain an IP from rr thru the modem.

The only time you will need her login name or passwords are for her email accounts hosted on the rr network ( i don't use them, i rather use yahoo so i can access it while i'm not at home more easily).

If you need more help you can private message me. :-D
