Setting up ICS with two PC's

I am getting RR in a week and would like to know if anyone can help me. I have two pc's that I will be sharing the cable connection. I am deciding between the linksys router and just a simple network kit with hub two nics. My dilemma is: Is there a way to have the 2 pc's sharing the internet connection, where one of the pc's does not have to be on all the time for the setup to work. So that if one person wanted to conect you could just connect with one pc without the other on and vice versa. Or will I have to purchase a second IP. Will the router allow me to do this?

the linksys router will allow you to do what you want, in terms of only having one computer on for the other to access the web. If you use connection sharing software the host computer would always have to be on for either computer to access the web.

I will mention another way to do it, but it cost more money, and I wouldn't use it personally, but that is to purchase 2ip's from your cable provider. then you can hook your cable modem directly to a hub, and either computer can access the web anytime. you effectively achive this with the router though, so I really reccomend that.

So no matter what setup I use I would always have to have host pc on to ICS. IF i purchased second IP, then would I be able to only have one pc attach with out having the other on? I basically want to have it so that either mine or my wifes pc can attach without the other one being on. I assume I would have to purchase second IP, or it can't be done at all?

yes, if you use ics you will always have to have the host comp on.

you don't have to buy a second ip if you use the router. and the router avoids using ICS.

sorry for the confusion

warlord, will the Linksys router allow me to share a dialup connection (while the DSL or cable connection is down) without the use of other connection sharing software?
