I am trying to set up a simple home network, with two computers. Both have Windows98 SE loaded on them. Both have working network cards installed. On each computer, the local Network Neighborhood can see the local computer (computer A can see A, computer B can see B).

Both computers have Client for Microsoft Networks installed, and both have the same Workgroup name (but different Computer Names). Both have the respective ethernet adapters loaded.

Both computers have been connected to a hub, but neither computer can see the other one. They don't show up the Network Neighborhood, nor can I map directly to the other computer. Is there anything special I need to set up? I thought it was basically plug them into a hub, and it was supposed to work. Years ago, I had this working under Windows95, but I don't remember the details of what I set up then.

Lots of possibilities.

What protocols did you install?

If you are sharing an Internet connection, I suggest adding NetBEUI and then clicking on Binding and assure File and Print Sharing is selected then check TCP/IP bindings and assure File and Print Sharing is not selected. This will help protect your PCs from share attacks over the Internet which is TCP/IP.

If you only have TCP/IP installed then make sure the IP addresses are consistant with the netmask to be on the same network and try using ping to assure the two systems can communicate.

Also make sure you have identified resources that you will be sharing.

Start with these and see where that gets you.
