I currently have cable internet service on one computer. I would like to set up my second computer with service also. I'm wondering if the products listed below will work for what I am wanting to do. I have a NIC (Pro200) in my main computer now.

This should be all I need right?

1. Linksys EtherFast 5 Port 10/100 Desktop Switch
2. CNet 10/100 Fast Ethernet LAN PCI-Bus Adapter(Pro200)
3. 10/100BT CAT5 PATCH RJ45M/RJ45M

Is the patch cable the right cable for this setup? Has anyone had a problems with this switch or pci adapter?

The way I understand it I just plug the switch into the modem, plug the two cables into the switch and run them to the seperate computers and that's it??

Thanks for the advice,

that patch cable should work fine.

don't forget to plug the cable from the modem into the UPLINK port on the switch..or if you don't have a specified uplink port, you have to use a crossover cable.

yes, it is as simple as running the other two wires to the two computers..but once that's done you've got some configuring to do!

and have you obtained a second IP address? or will you be running a proxy? what OS?

No go, unless you purchase a second internet IP address from your cable provider. For other setup options check info at www.homepclan.com, which also has links to other good networking sites.

Here is a very cheap and simple solution. For two pcs , you will need a total of 3 NICs and one crossover cable. There is no need for a switch ,hub or router. Install an extra NIC it the pc connected to the cable modem and then install one NIC in the other pc. Connect the crossover cable to the newly installed NICs and go to sygate.com and download Sygate Home Network. Follow the directions and thats it. It is so simple. If you have any trouble e-mail me and I'll help.

No I haven't obtained a second address,I have 98SE on both machines, it was my understanding that it will share and internet connection, so I didn't realize that I would need any other software (proxy software)or a second address.

Thanks for the link, very helpful, they also mentioned 98SE as having connection sharing availble?

Will that cut any of my bandwith to either computer? The last thing I want to do is is slow down my connection speed. The price of the cards are only abount $12 so it would be a great deal, but the switch is only $39 after rebate. For $27 more I can hook up a third computer (which I have) if I wanted.

Thanks for the information anything else I should consider?

If it's 98SE , you can sure can use ICS to share w/out other software. you might want to look into the cost of an extra IP , though (it's about 6.95 extra per month for me) because sometimes the computer that is behind the main computer cannot access certain websites or transfer files over AOL or what not because it's using a proxy of sorts. if you have the cash to spare, get 2 ip's, and set each 98 box up the same (except each will have different computer names as given to you by the cable modem company). then, if you eventually decide to hook up a third computer, you might wanna try messing around with Internet Connection Sharing in windows.

but that's just what i would do. unfortunately, i've never used ICS personally, so i'm not sure how well it works. good luck!
