Setting up HDD's

I heard that connecting a HDD and an optical drive on the same IDE chain isn't good, since it slows the HDD to optical speeds.

My current config:

Option1:

IDE 1 Master - Hitachi 7200 (8mb) 160gig
IDE 1 Slave - Plextor CDRW

IDE 2 Mater - Seagate 7200 (8mb) 160gig
IDE 2 Slave - DVD

Controller Card:
IDE 1 Master - Seagate 7200 (2mb) 40gig
IDE 1 Slave - Maxtor 7200 (2mb) 60gig

Would it be better to do this?:

Option 2:

IDE 1 Master - Hitachi 7200 (8mb) 160gig
IDE 1 Slave - Seagate 7200 (2mb) 40gig

IDE 2 Mater - Seagate 7200 (8mb) 160gig
IDE 2 Slave - Maxtor 7200 (2mb) 60gig

Controller Card:
IDE 1 Master - Plextor CDRW
IDE 1 Slave - DVD

Would I see better performance if I went with option 2?
Thanks.

I would put the CD and DVD on their own...which controller you use is up to you.

I would put the 2mb drives on the controller card unless one conatians the OS

I have mine set up with the hard drives on the controller card, the HD with the OS in pci card channel 1 as master,[4 hard drives]. and my 4 optical devices on the onboard IDE channels.

Absolutely not, since I haven't yet found a PCI IDE card that doesn't suck at controlling ATAPI devices.

What is going to be the primary use of the storage system - lots of DVD ripping/burning, drive-to-drive copying, etc? "Option 1" is a good start though - the placement of the drives still needs to be sorted out. I assume either the 40 or 60 will be used as the OS drive, and the remainder will be data.
