Setting up ftp?

Ok, here's the thing, Im tryin to set up an FTP so my friend can upload some files to me. I am on a computer with a wireless network adaptor. The computer with the modem and router is downstairs. How would i go about doing this? ive set up an account with the ip address from www.whatismyipaddress.com but nothing is working. how could i go about doing this? thanks

You have to Open (forward) the FTP ports in the Router so the info can reach to the computer (IP) with the ftp server.

Read your Router manual for instructions.

List of ports that are associated with various applications can be found here:

Special Applications - Port List.

if you are using a wireless router...
i'm assuming that you're using DHCP/NAT.

usually... the ip address that these routers assign are private IP address.
and private ip address are not accessible outside of your local network.

probably, the ip that you see when you go to www.whatismyipaddress.com is your router's ip.

go to the site that jackmds pointed... it should explain in greater detail.
