Setting up Firewall appliance

Hi,
I recently had someone come to help me install a Sonicwall TZ170.

How long should take to set up such an appliance?

The total number of hours for the job in my case was almost 13 hours. The bosses have told me that they were told it should not take more than 5 hours.

Thanks,

Rick

it really depends on your particular config requirements. that sounds like a long time. Did the person that helped you know what they were doing? are were they just kind of guessing and limping along?

Hi,
Yes, the person had experience with configuring firewalls. I was told that the Sonicwall units are tricky to configure. I had set up my previous 3Com firewall device(it was really simple compared to the Sonicwall, but had little in terms of reporting and tools).

The break down was as follows:

Day1: 4.25 hours- Review of network layout, Firewall rules, applications requiring Internet access.

Day2: 4.5 hours- Configuring Firewall device, testing of rules and applications. Training on use of device.

Day3: 1.5 hours - Setup and test remote access.

Day4: 3 hours -Resolve IP conflict issue.

The last time I set one of those up it took less than an hour, or perhaps a little more..it's been a while. It would have gone much quicker but I had to register it and attempt to pull the seran-wrap like substance off of the add on packs. Honestly what took the longest was trying to get the PPPoE password from Verizon...

Honestly, it is a very simple process. SW has a pretty clean layout, and nothing except so special NAT rules should take any time.

For reference, I set the box up and replaced a another router, setup PPPoE wit ha static IP (don't ask😛), added a few routes, opened up a few servers like filemaker and such, setup remote access for the router and the network via TS (RDP) and a bunch of other crap.

Now m0n0wall...that actually took some time😀

jsut image...no routing protocols on board:shocked:

5 hours would be more than sufficient for the TZ170 deployed in a home environment.
no way sufficient for an enterprise deployment.
trust me, I know, I've done it both ways......
