Setting up DSL in an apartment

I'm going to use AT&T and this is the first time I've ever used high-speed through DSL. I'm wondering do I have to get the DSL modem they offer? Or can I get a 3rd party modem that's cheaper? I know this is a noob question but I hate to have moved in my new apartment without any internet.

I would like to just buy the DSL subscription and set it up myself. I'm trying to avoid having to pay a "technician" $200 for something that's pretty self explanatory.

This is what AT&T suggests:

It is $100 from them with a 1 year warranty. This unit includes a 4 port router and also a WiFi connection

This next unit is just the correct Modem Only for AT&T DSL service
It does not have any router functions. $75 from AT&T
I would advise the unit with the router as it provides better security for your computer.
Also use of units suggested by the provider will be fully supported in the event of technical issues and will minimize or eliminate finger pointing due to use of what they will claim is "non approved equipment"

If you just order the service from them and provide your own equipment, they will make sure it is active at the NID for your unit. You would be responsible for the line going inside and the equipment working. If you buy the equipment from them and do the self install, same but at least the equipment they should cover if it doesn't work.

I would wager the tech coming out and installing it wouldn't even include the $85 or so they would charge if you needed a new line ran. So try the self install first, whether you pick up some used equipment or buy theirs is up to you.

In most cases, If you buy the devices from the provider. They will support the device if any reason it stops working. If you buy the device from other sources like newegg. They wont replace it since you did not get it from them.

Best would get a dsl from the provider it self. That way you will cover your rear end if it stops working for any reason.

If you're not real proficient with networking, then I would definitely suggest going with ATT's modem/router combo unit. If you use any modem that's not provided by ATT - you get ZERO help with it. They will literally tell you that on the phone and you are quite literally on your own for any and all issues you encounter. It might not be the cheapest option but if you run into any issues, the expense will quickly balloon as you'll need to hire some higher up help to configure everything.

As is when you use their equipment they would tell stories that their All Mighty Computer :sneaky: claims that it is your fault.

Judging from the rate that their computer is Not really finding the troubles, I think that they actually have an Abacus.

When you do not use their equipment, it is 99.9% that at at first trouble you would end up paying for Home visit.

This would make the puny initial saving nothing as compare to the Home Visits.
