I was thinking of going with 3 WD Red Plus 4TB drives mounted in a QNAP Tr-004. Later expanding to a full 4 drives. I have been told that CMR drives are the best to use, and also not to buy all the drives at onc, but to buy them from different places and also at different times, in order to not get the same batch of drives which would all theoretically expire at the same time.
I think its good advice but I'll probably get the drives at Amazon, NewEgg, and where else is good ?
Does this sound like a logical route to go ?

Yes, that’s a solid plan. 👍
WD Red Plus CMR is a good choice for NAS, much more reliable than SMR.
Staggering purchases from different batches vendors is indeed smart lowers the chance of multiple drives failing at the same time.
Amazon and Newegg are fine, but also check places like B&H, Provantage, or even direct from WD if they run promos.

Overall, what you’re thinking sounds logical and safe for long term use.
