Setting Up Comcast -- Need new modem recommendation

walkure

I currently have SBC Yahoo DSL, but am going to switch to Comcast cable internet.

I am running my DSL modem behind a Linksys WRT54G wireless router.

When you sign up for Comcast at Best Buy, you get $19.99 for the first 6 months, a $75 Best Buy gift card, and a FREE (after $80 rebate) Motorola SurfBoard Cable Modem -- Model: SB5120.

I'm wondering if this modem is fully compatible with my Linksys router. Or should I look into getting a Linksys cable modem, such as this Linksys - EtherFast Cable Modem with USB BEFCMU10. The Linksys modem is also $79.99, though I'm not sure if they have a rebate available for that one.

Thanks!

You should be fine. I would go with the Motorola SB over the Linksys, not that anything is wrong with Linksys but the Motorolas have a reputation for being able to stay linked at noise levels other modems can't handle.

My Motorola has been ticking along for 2 1/2 years now. No problems at all. It has worked perfectly with a Linksys, a Netgear, and (my current) DLink DI624. All with no problems at all.

Wait, they're still selling the BEFCMU10? It's a piece of crap. When I set up my brother's house, the BEFCMU10 he got as part of Comcast's deal at the time would consistantly lock up if their were numerous connections in use(think BitTorrent, etc), and if Linksys fixed it you would never know, since only Comcast can update cable modem firmware. I had to dig up a Surfboard 4200 I had in storage and use that instead(best cable modem I've ever owned). Get the Moto by all means.
