Setting up an LCD for optimal gaming performance

Hey guys, brand-n00bian here.

I'm trying to get the most out of my Dell 1905fp and my eVGA 6800nu combo. I've been hearing how some people have to do all this tweaking to make their screens look right. I know that can be a matter of taste, but there ought to be somethings that should be looked at.

I know I should try to run all games at the native resolution, I've got that much down. One question is, what do I need Vertical Sync for? Where should most of the brightness come from, the video card or the screen. My display properties allow me to set my screen at 60hz or 75hz, why is there even an option? Let's start off with some of these questions, and please feel free to recommend other settings as well.

Vertical Sync makes the framerate stay synchronized with the refresh rate of the monitor. I always keep it enabled.

Yes, it will improve the quality of your games. There is an effect called tearing which it eliminates. It is hard to decribe. You will notice the difference when you enable it. Your framerate will not be able to surpass your refresh rate, but who needs more than 85FPS to be satisfied? I have also noted that the game seemed to play smoother with VSync on. Framerate is impacted slightly, but the view just transitions much better when you look around quickly.

If i were using a CRT I would make is disabled. LCD, definitely enabled. You experience tooo much tearing if you don't.
