Setting up an FTP server behind a Linksys Router

I have a 2 computer LAN using a Linksys BEFSR41 router with firmware version 1.42.6. One system has WinXP and the other has Win98se. I've been trying to set up an FTP server on the WinXP system using Bulletproof FTP v2.15 but it seems doing so behind a router can be complicated.

I know that I have to use port forwarding but I can't seem to use it so that it uses port 21 only. Whenever I set try to set it up that way by inputting a port range of 21 to 21 in the linksys router and as the passive port range in Bulletproof, then whenever a user tries to connect, he/she gets stuck when the message "Entering passive mode" comes up.

I have been able to get my FTP to work if I set a port range of 27015 - 27025 in the router and as a passive port range in Bulletproof. This has allowed people to connect but ONLY if I give them an address in this format... "ftp://ipaddress:27015" They would not be able to connect simply with my ip address only.

This isn't too bad but I wanted to setup a www.no-ip.com so that I would have a static address that would update itself when my IP changes.. but that method only works if I have my FTP setup on port 21.

Any ideas?? Sorry if this post is a bit confusing.... setting up the FTP behind a router is a pain..

You should consider yourself lucky. I heard that the linksys routers only allow ftpd's to run on port 21. Besides, if you can opt to NOT run it on port 21, why wouldnt you? Port 21 is the port EVERY ISP looks at to see if you are running an ftp. i say stick with 27015.

your friends can learn how to put in a couple numbers, and its safer, and easier for you.

does this mean that the BEFSRW11 (wireless cablerouter) also lets u run ftp on multiple ports?

could i see a screen shot of your passive port configurations in BPFTPD?

I have had the same problem. The answer I found was to get the client to check the opposite of what their setting is for passive.

Another thought is that although port 21 is for ftp so is 20. you might wanna open that range in your forwarding....
