Setting up an external HDD?

Alright, so there's a sticker inside the case that says I should set the HDD to Master, so I've got the jumper in for the "Master with Slave" setting rather than Cable Select, Single or Master, or Slave setting. I plug it in, XP recognizes it as USB Mass Storage .. I go to format it, and the WD LifeGuard tools, Partition Magic, and even Windows Format all report it as 2 TERAbytes.. Needless to say it won't format properly. Anyone know what's going on here?

Even checking properties in the Device Manager for this USB Mass Storage claim it to be 2097151 MB. I wish it were 2 TB, but it's not. Hmm.

Try setting the drive to Single master. Western Digitail drives have to be set to that if they are by themselves. the Master with slave setting is for if there is a slave drive attached to the same cable.

Already tried that, still reported at 2 TB.

try CS?

i'm assuming you bought an enclosure and stuck a drive in it? are you using the cable that came with the enclosure? it might also be that the chipset of the enclosure is crap, a lot of external chipsets are.

Yeah, using the IDE that's hardwired to the enclosure. Going to try CS, I'm sorta thinking it's just a lame chipset as it seems to be working fine .. aside from reporting 1 decimal point off ..

<edit> Drive wouldn't even spin up on CS, going to shut down, unplug my slave, try this drive as a slave, and see what happens. In addition, if it's just a crap enclosure chipset, can anyone recommend an enclosure that WILL work? 🙂</edit>
