alright, fellas. i just installed redhat 9 on one of my harddrives and it's running absolutely normal, except for one thing.

Whenever i try to set up my internet connection it doesn't happen at all. First off, if anyone else is using SBCYahoo on RedHat, let me know because if you set it up, tell me how.

If not, why would my adsl connection not be working? I connect through ethernet, but it's a dsl connection, so which do i use? I've tried both with the same result each time.

Help?

Assuming pppoe and no router inbetween the modem and the computer. If you have a router you can put in the pppoe settings and have the router do the login functions. Otherwise you'll need a software client, which this post mentions.

I started out with same escalating frustration with Mandrake 9.1 (dual-booted with W98SE) for DSL access through SBCGlobal. My ultimate solution didn't require spending any extra money for a router. The answer was ... install and use TKPPPOE. SBCGLOBAL uses PPPOE. Once installed and set up (directions available on-line by Googling for TKPPPOE were sufficient for this newbie) TKPPPOE plays quite nicely with the Speedstream 5360 modem supplied to me free by SBC-Yahoo. All I needed was SBC's gateway address (can get by calling customer service, but I found it in the Enternet connect program that is part of SBCYahoo's Win install) and account name and password (in my case, previously set up during the SBCYahoo Win install).
TKPPPOE establishes a gateway connection in the "blink of an eye". Then Konqueror can cruise the net without all the "overhead/content" that accompanies SBCYahoo's browser (MS IE in disguise, of course). Access to SBC-Yahoo for email or other content actually wanted from them just requires plugging SBCYahoo into the Konqueror search box and logging in whenthe SBCYahoo dialogue box is presented.

Testing the download and upload speeds showed the Mandrake 9.1 side of box provided download speeds about 30% faster than the W98 side and the connect via mandrake/TKPPPOE is about 100x faster and connects every time as opposed to the SBCYahoo connect which "hangs" once or twice almost every time (although it will connect given enough tries). Also, the Mandrake/TKPPPOE connection will stay "up" until I choose to exit regardless of whether Konqueror is active. The W98/SBCYahoo connect "exits" on its own quite regularly if the SBCYahoo browser is not in active use. Given that the same telephone line and DSL modem are being used, I can only conclude that between W98SE and SBCYahoo's Win-based software there are a lot of strange software-related events going on and/or SBCGlobal/Yahoo is deliberately knocking Win users off line if they aren't active so they can conserve bandwidth.
