I use a wired SMC router and have for months, I love it and have had no problems at all, so I'm planning on going with a wireless SMC router for a friend who needs a wireless network.

Router:

newegg also has a 54mbps version of the router, this one is 11mbps...what would the difference be really? I'm not sure how much of it is actually utilized. His main comp will be running wired to the router to his cable modem, the second comp will be used by his daughter so it's not really necessary to get super high speeds or anything.

Wireless Adapter:

I honestly have no idea about wireless adapters or wireless nic cards, I've never used one. This one has a few good reviews and since it's a brand I'm familiar with, I figured it'd be good. Will the router/adapter be a good combo? The price is good, at about $70 shipped for the combo.

Unfortunately that doesn't mention the SMC products at all...I'm more concerned with knowing whether the two parts I've got there will work together or not, heh. I assume so though.

It will work.

However you are going the pay $60 for an old 802.11b

If you want 802.11b there are combos like this for $20-$30

For about $60-$80 you can get a nice 802.11g set.

No reason that your friend would pay extra just because you happen to know the Word SMC.

I'm paying for it, so that's not too big of an issue. I'm more concerned with the fact that I've had 4 D-Link routers die, 7 linksys routers die, and 3 netgear routers die...not one SMC yet, thus making it my preference. I don't know if D-Link makes its wireless better than wired or not, if so then perhaps it might be worthwhile.
