Question Setting up a wifi repeater

Hi all. Trying to get round a problem I have with my xfinity router (Arris TG1682G). This router does not allow me to use a vpn so I'm trying a work around.
There are many ways around this but I would like to try to use this fix if possible , with some help from some experts...

I have had for years a new Linksys WRT54GS which I have never used and would like to explain what I would like to do.

I believe the wrt54 will accept a vpn so can I setup this router to extend my wifi range and anything connected it do through the vpn?

If if this is possible I will need some assistance in setting up this new router.
