Setting up a VPN between two different ISP's

My friend and I were thinking about setting up a VPN with win 2k. The only problem is that I have a cable modem with MediaOne and he has DSL with Pacbell and we both are using proxy servers. The win 2k server is going to be at his house and we are going to use ip address authentication (my ip address is supposedly dynamic, but it has been the same for over 6 months). My main concern is whether or not I will be able to access the server from my computer behind my proxy server. Before I have tried to play TCP/IP games over our connection, but we are unable to do so because of our proxy servers. Is there anyway around this? Thanks in advance! :)

We pretty much set up the windows 2000 server today and we were able to create a workgroup and access the internet. I think we can use digital certificates for my computer to access the VPN. I'll know later this week if this works or not. ;)

We got the windows server up and installed the VPN service for it. I installed the VPN adapter for my computer and made a new dial up networking connection using the ip address for the Windows server. I am able to connect, but I don't see the server or my friend's computer in Network Neighborhood. We are using the same workgroup and are being assigned the same subnet mask, but I can only see the computers on my local area network. I am also using Sygate to share my internet connection. Could it be possible that Sygate is causing me problems? My friend is using ICS for windows 2000 for his internet connection. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks :)

Try manually typeing his computers name in network neighborhood. ie

\\Hiscomputer

That might help. Also you might want to have one of your computers be a dns server and set that up on your computer as a secondary DNS or later. See if that helps.

I tried typing the name in network neighborhood, but I am still unable to see him. Although setting up a computer as a dns server sounds like a good idea. Thanks for the suggestion. I will let you know if it works or not.

Analogsoul,
Could you please share with us what was your final solution? I'm a networking newbie and don't attest to be vpn expert either but I am curious of your implimentation :)
